Win XP (up-to-date)
problem: I have 2 usb ports on the front of my tower. I used both for popping in a flash drive successfully for a year. then my wife's flash drive started to completely hang win xp upon insertion into port. my flash drive worked fine. upon problem, a reboot is only remedy (with flash drive in place). CTRL-ALT-Delete is dead. this problem seemed to manifest in 1 or the other port, but not both. Later it involved both ports. Recently, the problem surfaced with my flash drive, and eventually manifested in both ports. I sought help on this site at this time. I read about "unchecking 'power management' " for usb root hub. indeed, boxes were checked to my surprise. i unchecked them. the problem disappeared until next bootup. problem persisted even though 'power management' has never shown up 'checked' again. next i uninstalled 'usb root hub' and 'usb mass storage device' drivers. (BTW, my PC shows 7 of the former and 2 of the latter, together with other "intel enhanced host controllers', etc. ) i forced win xp to reinstall these for me. problem disappeared for one to three boot cycles; then returned. repeated this uninstalling the 'usb mass storage' drivers that i am almost certain correspond to these 2 ports. forced a reinstall for these 2 drivers. problem resolved for 1 to 3 boot cycles and returned. tried this again one or two times. same result. i went to site: DriverGuide.com and found a 2003 dated version offering of the same driver i had been replacing associated with the 2 'usb storage device' listings. it is file: USBSTOR.sys. my original was dated 2001. i saved my driver and replaced it in my 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers' folder with the downloaded version by same name. again, i uninstalled the 2 and forced win xp to reinstall - presumably picking up the downloaded new driver. this resolved the problem for enough boot cycles (3 to 5) that i thought the problem was solved. now it has returned. my flash drive is a typical attache brand i don't know what else to try. any help will be appreciated. thanks. william
