usb port flash drive freezes/hangs win xp

Win XP (up-to-date)

problem:  I have 2 usb ports on the front of my tower.  I used both for popping in a flash drive successfully for a year.  then my wife's flash drive started to completely hang win xp upon insertion into port.  my flash drive worked fine.  upon problem, a reboot is only remedy (with flash drive in place).  CTRL-ALT-Delete is dead. this problem  seemed to manifest in 1 or the other port, but not both. Later it involved both ports.  Recently, the problem surfaced with my flash drive, and eventually manifested in both ports.  I sought help on this site at this time.  I read about "unchecking 'power management' " for usb root hub.  indeed, boxes were checked to my surprise.  i unchecked them.  the problem disappeared until next bootup.  problem persisted even though 'power management' has never shown up 'checked' again.    next i uninstalled 'usb root hub' and 'usb mass storage device' drivers. (BTW, my PC shows 7 of the former and 2 of the latter, together with other "intel enhanced host controllers', etc. ) i forced win xp to reinstall these for me.  problem disappeared for one to three boot cycles; then returned.  repeated this uninstalling  the 'usb mass storage' drivers that i am almost certain correspond to these 2 ports.  forced a reinstall for these 2 drivers.  problem resolved for 1 to 3 boot cycles and returned.  tried this again one or two times.  same result.  i went to site:  DriverGuide.com and found a 2003 dated version offering of the same driver i had been replacing associated with the 2 'usb storage device' listings.  it is file:  USBSTOR.sys.  my original was dated 2001.  i saved my driver and replaced it in my 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers' folder with the downloaded version by same name.  again, i uninstalled the 2 and forced win xp to reinstall - presumably picking up the downloaded new driver.  this resolved the problem for enough boot cycles (3 to 5)  that i thought the problem was solved.  now it has returned.  my flash drive is a typical attache brand i don't know what else to try.  any help will be appreciated.  thanks.   william

many thanks to nobus and johnb6767........

I have had time only to check johnb6767's suggestion.  the answer is 'no'.  when the phenomenon occurs, no related message/warning appears in any of the event logs.  meantime, i installed a self-powered 7-port hub because i intend to install a cam so we can visit my son, daughter-in-law and grandson with video.  of course, i tried the flash drive with those new ports and it works fine.  Next i tried the 2 "problem" ports again, and both worked.  next time i started up, one worked and the other didn't.  at this point i was tempted to drop the issue b/c i have the new ports in a convenient location.

then an unrelated (i think) problem has caused me to place the issue on a back burner.  My PC refused to boot at all, even in safe mode.  it would get through the bios portion of the boot and just before the expected blue welcome win xp screen (after the black winxp screen that shows the moving blue 'boot progress' squares) the system stops.  i couldn't boot from a winxp os cd-rom or a cd on whcih i have a 'windiag.iso' file for mem checking.

I checked using 'ctrl-h' on my abit IT7 MAX2 ver.2 motherboard.  I was panicking a little and not being careful.  i intended to check boot order under the bios, and found myself studying system parameters that made me think may my cpu fan had died and high temp was the problem.  i had never engaged any of the abit board's capacity to monitor fan operation/heat.  i chose to do this changing a few related settings and saving followed by exit.  one change was that i opted to have the system shut itself off in the event that hight temp was detected.  at this time, i pulled the sides off my tower and rebooted. every fan i have (about seven from case to power supply to cpu is working fine to my surprise.  but here is the bad stuff.  the system automatically halts the boot process after about 3 seconds.  i assume this is my fault after changing the settings i mentioned.

i plan to take the pc to a computer shop.  i don't have the hardware resources or enough time just now to pursue it further myself.  i appreciate your help on the usb port issue, but now it is not my larger problem.  thanks...........
your welcome !
