Spin down SATA drives?

Can kernel 2.6 or some utility tell a SATA drive to spin down when its not needed?  I know it must spin up when I reboot, but I don't need it afterwards.  The server would be a new dell poweredge if that matters.

Hi scottg,

You may be looking for the hdparm command.
hdparm -y /dev/hdX (where X is your drive) should put your drive in standby mode, usually causing it to spindown.

Cheers!

hdparm will not work on SATA or SCSI disk with /dev/sdX.

Check your BIOS setting on the motherboard first to turn power management on the disks.
