Is Panda AV slowing our XP systems, or did a virus get past it, or -- ? What's the fix?

We (K-12 public school corp., 5,000+ networked users) are seeing widespread system slowdowns on XP SP2 machines running freestanding Panda Antivirus or Panda Platinum (various vintages). A look at Task Manager shows Panda files using large amounts of resources. This is a relatively recent phenomenon -- last two or three weeks. panda was always a resource hog, but not this bad. Troubleshooting measures show systems speed up when Panda is uninstalled, but, of course, such machines get infected right away.

We are in the process of switching from Panda to Sophos, in the hope that their centrally-administered AV product will actually travel and function over our Novell network, as Panda was supposed to, but didn't. (That's another story...) Meanwhile, the users with Panda and sluggish systems are gathering outside our offices with torches and pitchforks, chanting angry slogans... Help.
