re-install xp dell inspiron 3800 no external cd drive

I have a Dell inspiron 3800 with flopy drive only. It recently had an os problem and now can not get to windows -it keeps rebooting- . So I was trying to reinstall windows xp, but could not get it to recognize the usb external cd-drive.

How can I reinstall or repair windows with flopy and external usb hard drive only. what are the available solutions.

This link will show you how to use a floppy to load USB drivers for the CD-Rom. You should then be able to copy the installation files to the HDD.

I have  a recovery cd, but there is no option in the bois  of this old laptop for network. it does not have an ethernet  network either.

interestingly, I was putting a pcmcia wireless card when it crashed and now keep rebooting. is it possible to do windows repair on dos mod?

I have tried to boot with dos, run c://windows/system32/chkdsk, but it says can't run this prog in dos mode.

Actually I just downloaded the ms installation floppy, and added the duse files into the first floppy -I am not sure if that helped however-. http://www.pocketech.net/downloads/duse_4_4.zip

and then now I am able to install from the usb external cd drive.
ok, do one thing, remove your hard disk, if you have any external USB drive then attach your laptop's drive in to it. connect it to any working system through usb. format it, transfer the system ( if you attach it with any win98/dos system you can copy the system files by using sys command) copy the i386 folder from the cd to this drive. ( tip: some times emm386.exe is needed for making the installation process faster by extended memory support)

attach it back to your laptop, boot it and run the setup, hopefully it will work.

There are some programs which can make your usb drive bootable, but i have heard that bios support is needed for that. ( i have not tested this thing).
do let me know if u face any problem,

As I mentioned in my last comments, problem is now solved the way stated.

Laptops Notebooks

A laptop or notebook is a portable personal computer with a clamshell form factor, suitable for mobile use. Although originally there was a distinction between laptops and notebooks, the former being bigger and heavier than the latter, there is often no longer any difference. Laptops are commonly used in a variety of settings, such as at work, in education, and for personal multimedia. A laptop combines the components, inputs, outputs and capabilities of a desktop computer, including the display screen, speakers, a keyboard, and pointing devices (such as a touchpad or trackpad) into a single unit. The device can be powered either from a rechargeable battery or by mains electricity from an AC adapter.
