Exchange 5.5 - 16GB priv.edb - Did not shrinked!

I have an Exchange 5.5 SP4 server...

The priv.edb file is 16GB!

I did it an offline defrag "eseutil /d /ispriv" but the file is still 16GB!

1) Why the file did not shrinked?

2) How can I find the free space inside the DB?

3) How can I know if my exchange DB needs a defrag?

Thank you
Exchange

the file would only shrink if there is white space in the database.
white space comes when the items/mailboxes deleted have been marked for deletion after the online maintenance runs.
check the following article about find free space in the database

I guess from your question you didn't check how much white space was in the database? My article above (amset.info) explains how to check.
If you got lots of users to delete content, then the content may still be in the database because of deleted item retention. If you want to reclaim the space you need to change DIR down to 0, then wait for the online defrag to run and mark the white space. Then you can run an offline defrag.

The retention setting was 0! and the result of cleanup was always:

Cleanup of items past retention date for Item Recovery is complete.
Start: 0 items; 0 Kbytes
End: 0 items; 0 Kbytes

What does event ID 1221 say over night?
It doesn't look like you are going to be gaining much space, so it is time to shout at the users to delete content, or migrate off a version of Exchange that is 10 years old.

In the last 2-3 months, users had delete a lot of emails...! Last night the white space was 433MB...

Yesterday I did a repair - defrag - isinteg fix....

I will monitor it and see what happens...
