RPC SERVER UNAVAILABLE ERROR WHEN ATTEMPTING TO JOIN AN AD FOREST

While attempting to join an SP1 Windows 2003 server (as child domain) to an AD forest, am getting an "RPC server unavailable error" shortly after entering my credentials in response to DCPROMO command.
Am pointed at the forest DNS server. Will highly appreciate any ideas.

Please post more information regarding your parent domain:
number of servers
FSMO role allocations

There must be some log entries in the Event Log regarding this error.

Are the new domain server and the parent domain DCs set up on the same network subnet?
Any firewalls in between?

The parent DC is not on the same subnet as the local server i am attempting to join in. Need to get answers for the rest of vlitvinov's questions.

As for grenade's comment, i assume i can set up my local server as a DNS server after i successfully join. Right now i am pointed at the parent domain's DNS server and have built a host file on the local server. Seems like i can resolve the parent's host name fine.
