asked on

Cisco HP connection problem.

Hello,

Can anyone help with the follwing problem?

I have a cisco3750 with a link to a second 3750 and hanging off the second 3750 are HP ProCurves. The first 3750 has 2 VLANs which are extended to the HPs via a trunk. I can ping both VLANs (networks) from both 3750s. However, I have added a management IP address to one of the VLANs on the HP switch and I can only ping it from the second 3750 - if I try from the fist 3750 I get Request Timed Out. The HP switches are not routing - that's left to the 3750s.

The only way I can telnet into the HPs is to piggy-back off the second 3750.

Does anyone know what's going on?

I did a trace from my workstation -

Tracing route to 172.16.0.1 over a maximum of 30 hops   > VLAN I am trying to ping

  0  194.82.253.113  >workstation
  1  194.82.253.126  >gatwaway interface of first 3750
  2  192.168.3.22      >routing interface of second 3750
  3     *        *        *  >times out here

So, the packet is being routed correctly by the first 3750 straight to the interface of the second 3750 but doesn't get any further than that?

It's the same if I trace from the second router:

Tracing the route to 172.16.0.1

  1 192.168.3.22 0 msec 0 msec 0 msec  >interface of second 3750
  2  *  *  *
  3  *  *  *
  4  *  *  *

By router I mean the 3750s

I figured it out. I didn't have a gateway on the HP switches.

it might be spanning-tree problem between Cisco and HP. check your Cisco switch trunk

# show interface trunk

for example
spanning-tree forwarding ........................
Gi0/23     vlan 1,10.......    ---> normally
Gi0/24     vlan 1                --> connected to HP switch, only allow vlan 1
Routers
Routers

A router is a networking device that forwards data packets between computer networks. Routers perform the "traffic directing" functions on the Internet. The most familiar type of routers are home and small office cable or DSL routers that simply pass data, such as web pages, email, IM, and videos between computers and the Internet. More sophisticated routers, such as enterprise routers, connect large business or ISP networks up to the powerful core routers that forward data at high speed along the optical fiber lines of the Internet backbone. Though routers are typically dedicated hardware devices, use of software-based routers has grown increasingly common.
