SQL 2005 Backup Device tape drive not found

I am using SQL 2005 on Server 2003 standard edition.  I have added a Hewlett Packard DAT72 USB drive to this server.  This tape drive is listed as a 'Tape Drive' under the Server 2003 Device Manger.  The device status is 'This device is working properly'.

I want to use this tape drive for my SQL 2005 backups.  In SQL Server Management Studio, under Server Objects, under Backup Devices, I right-click 'New Backup Device...'.  Under Backup Device Destination, I have the choice to choose either tape or file.

I would like to choose my tape drive device, only the tape option is greyed out.  Why does SQL 2005 limit me from using the tape drive listed under Server 2003 device manager?

Thanks,
Scott

In device manager, I currently see no device letter for this USB tape drive - or anyway to change it.

I've tried using windows backup but there is no 'sql backup' option to select (like I have for Exchange 2003).  Using windows backup, I could choose the SQL databases but I want the logs cleared with a successful backup.  I only know how to do this using the database backup option from within SQL 2005.

Any other ideas to get this backup device listed under Server 2003 device manager to show up in SQL 2005?

Thanks

You are missing the point:  Re-read what MOA81 suggested (my emphasis):
"take a windows backup to the tape **after** you have finished your SQL backup"

No points please.
