why GSM use two types of modulation? (GMSK and PCM)

why GSM use two types of modulation? (GMSK and PCM)
modulation means, adding message to the carrier frequency,  so why GSM use two different types of modulation?

dear fellows,
all these are 'book' words. i search extensively internet to understand PCM and GMSK. so, i know what they are doing in signalling world.
can u please speak in a simpler/understanding way?  like as i said, 'modulation' means , adding subscriber voice into carrier frequency

like if i wanna go to Washington from New york , i would take either plane or bus or train. I do have many choice but i would select one of them.

so, if GSM wants to add message to carrier frequency, it should accpet one method only.

from PCM definition looks like, PCM is a A/D signal converter. so, PCM probably, is a ADC and DAC with s additional extra stuff,
