Font: How to find the font necessary to edit the text layer?

I am a web developer (not a designer) and have not had much experience manipulating PSD files. This has mostly been done for me by the web designer. However, I have a job where the web designer is no longer available and all we have is the PSD file.

I am trying to do something very simple (for a designer) by editing a text layer in Photoshop. However, when I click on the text layer, it tells me that the font is not installed on my computer, even though I have what appears to be the correct font. You can view a screenshot of the problem message, and my control panel listing of fonts here: http://www.minisage.com/fontproblem.jpg

Is it possible that the original PSD was created by a program other than Photoshop, and that it used its own fonts?

How can I get the fonts needed to udpate the text layer without requiring font substitution?

Thanks experts!

Rascal,

"Is it possible that the original PSD was created by a program other than Photoshop..."?
Yes, but more likely is that it was created on a Mac and you are using a PC (or vice versa), and for that reason is not quite recognizing the font.

Can you simply allow it to substitute, wipe out the text as is (delete and make a new layer if you have to, or simply highlight the font with the text tool, and delete), and then re-type the entire text using your font (which, you have established, is the same, even if not recognized as such)?

Cheers,

Hi LHerrou,

I had tried what you suggested, I clicked on the text and when it prompted me to replace the font, I did so and then replaced the text, and it came out quite close - but still obvious that the font was not identical.

I'll bet you are right about the Mac vs. PC issue. I'll stand by for any other comments, but I'll bet that is the 'answer' in this case.

Thanks!

Interesting, Photoshop knows that we have the 'wrong' version, but it would be nice if Photoshop could also identify the specific font details so we could fetch the correct one. I mean, if Photoshop knows the dont we have is not the correct one, it should be able to identify precisely which one is the correct one. Looks like an enhancement request for the Photoshop interface :)
I know this is no consolation, nor an answer to your problem, but be glad this is just an issue in a photoshop file. Often this sort of font problem can cause massive reflow in a Quark or Indesign document.

Keep in mind also that some people will actually go in and edit legit fonts that you might have the same actual font, from the same actual foundary. But, because they went in and edited the font (in something like fontagrapher or the like) their version is now different and looks/behaves/flows different. And if your client cannot get you the actual font, you're screwed!

Thanks LHerrou, I haven't been able to confirm this, but it would seem to be the logical answer (along with the possibility that the fonts were mac fonts and I am on PC).

Thanks again!
