Need to Determine Web Server Hardware Requirements

What is the best way to accurately determine the hardware requirements I need to meet for a new web server?  I know the amount of anticipated unique visitors per day and daily visits, etc.  Is there some formula or tool I can use to aid me in this?

well you also need to know content, is there server side scripting, database(s)?

just unique visits per day is not enough information to calculate from.

if you are running php/asp.net or any other server side apps, then you need to benchmark those before you can use vists per day  to calculate hardware needs.

also, what os, webserver?

Hmmm...  I guess this wasn't as easy as I thought.  I have opted to follow the model of another network I had access to since there isn't any clear-cut method to measure this.  We are putting together the infrastructure for the web apps that technically do not exist yet.  So there is obviously nothing to run a benchmark on, and we would therefore not be able to use that method to get this done.

I appreciate your input.

yes, it is difficult estimated server needs for asp.net projects, especially while they are under development.

good luck.

For myself if you have a good budget go with something like:

At least 3.0 ghz Xeon (if you can take a Dual core or dual processor, go for it)
At least 1Gb ram (2-3Gb will be the best)
HD go with SATA
100mbit connection

this would be a good configuration ;)

Web Servers

A web server refers to the software that helps to deliver web content that can be accessed either through the Internet or through an intranet. The primary function of a web server is to store, process and deliver web pages to clients. The communication between client and server takes place using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). The most common use of web servers is to host websites, but there are other uses such as gaming, data storage, running enterprise applications, handling email, FTP, etc.
