McAfee is reported to be quite good, but still a little heavy on computer resources.

You can set up AVG Free to automatically scan your emails, and if you wished schedule your HD scans in periods when you're not using your computer.
You will hardly be aware that it's running!

there are other possibilities, but try the AVG free first.
Then check if your disk is running in DMA mode, not PIO

Remove Norton using the symnrt tool:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_Tool_SymNRT_d4749.html

Instructions here:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&docid=2005092709200113&nsf=sharedtech.nsf&view=docid

Go to Start-Run, type msconfig and click on the "startups" tab.  Untick everything except security software. Go to services, tick "hide all Microsoft services" and do the same. Reboot.

Clear your system of temp. files using Cleanup:

http://www.stevengould.org/software/cleanup/download.html

And check to see if your HDD is powerfully fragmented:
Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Defragmenter

If it is still running slow after all of the above, suspect a specific system file problem...

buildingit,
Noticed that your Profile indicates that you still have 85 Questions open today (since 12/19/2006), and we would be most grateful if you could reduce this number to help the Moderators, Page Editor, and *all* the Experts involved with your problems.

To your advantage you will get a much better response (and several more Experts to assist you), if they see that you close your questions promptly.

Perhaps this article on Closing Questions will help.
Hope you understand our position.  Please reply if you have any problems.  Thank you.   >>

Thanks for replying.
If you click on the link below you will see how to close a successful anwser in *one* step.  Notice that if an Expert posts a comment which *answers* your question, just click on the "Accept as Solution" button, and the rest is done for you.

But, if an Expert does *not answer* your question, provide him or her with some more details, so that he can help you further.

Then, *if* a question cannot be answered at all, there are various options, but ALL are explained in the link below.

Hope that helps.  Perhaps you can gradually work through your list of 85 questions, we would all much appreciate it.    Thank you.   Jonvee.

Quote:   If a comment posted by an Expert has answered your question, then you should select the Expert's comment as the answer to your question. In case of duplicate or similar comments, you should always select the first comment posted.
Sometimes one EE Expert will post a comment which answers your question but contains a typo or minor error. Another Expert may post a correction. In this case you should usually select the answer of the first Expert, but only if it differs from the first answer. If you would like to reward the second Expert, you can split the points.
To select the Expert's comment, locate the experts comment in the question. The comment block has a button that says "Accept as Solution". Simply click on this link to select the Expert's comment as the answer. This will display a new page where you need to select a grade. You will be returned to the question page where you can enter a final comment; "Thank you" is definitely appreciated.   Unquote:
