Exchange routing connector unavailable Help! Please

I have a routing group connector in exchange 2003 which is forwarding through a smart host and it’s unavailable. All my mail is banking up and I can’t find a resolution for making it available. I have rebooted all servers in question. I can ping the smart host from the exchange server.
What can be causing this?

Try testing the SMTP connection by using the telnet command from the Exchange server.

On the smart host, open a command prompt and run: netstat -an

You should see something that looks like this (there should be a lot more as well):

Active Connections

Proto  Local Address          Foreign Address        State
  TCP    0.0.0.0:25             0.0.0.0:0              LISTENING

If you don't see the server listening on port 25, then its not going to accept SMTP connections.  I'm not familiar with ISVW myself, but you way want to see if the SMTP engine is online on that box.

That may well fix it.  I was thinking however that the smtp porttion of the Trend gateway had been shut off somehow.  Perhaps a stopped service?
