Exchange routing connector unavailable Help! Please

I have a routing group connector in exchange 2003 which is forwarding through a smart host and it’s unavailable. All my mail is banking up and I can’t find a resolution for making it available. I have rebooted all servers in question. I can ping the smart host from the exchange server.
What can be causing this?

Try testing the SMTP connection by using the telnet command from the Exchange server.

Ok thanks I cannot telnet into the gateway server that acts as a smarthost Its running Trend ISVW6 6.01 ive tried telneting using the local address and from outide the organisation and no joy.
I have retarted the server and the Trend serices but still nothing

On the smart host, open a command prompt and run: netstat -an

You should see something that looks like this (there should be a lot more as well):

Active Connections

  Proto  Local Address          Foreign Address        State
  TCP    0.0.0.0:25             0.0.0.0:0              LISTENING


If you don't see the server listening on port 25, then its not going to accept SMTP connections.  I'm not familiar with ISVW myself, but you way want to see if the SMTP engine is online on that box.

no port 25 listening
i may try reinstalling Trend as i cannot see anything else The gateway is Win 2003 with Trend running on it - thats it

That may well fix it.  I was thinking however that the smtp porttion of the Trend gateway had been shut off somehow.  Perhaps a stopped service?

Trend support advised installing new version which is 6.02 which when done worked - still dont know really what caused it though I have awarded u the points as u sent me off in the correct direction - thanks
