quicktime 7.5.1 will not install in windows xp environment

Environment Windows xp pro.  When trying to update to QUICKTIME 7.5.1from quicktime 6.5 the installation just stops at point where it is trying to configure windows for quicktime.  I have tried uninstalling version 6.5.  using regedit to remove Apple, the old quicktime keys und hkey_classes_root.  i have also tried to install quicktime with itunes (version 7.5.1) & it fails with the message, installlation unsuccessful, itunes needs quicktime installed.  This happens both with & without quicktime 6.5 installed.   Does the error message mean it needs quicktime 7.5.1.  If so, the problem is i can not install quicktime 7.5.1 (as discussed above) on its own.
Thanks for your help

Uninstall quicktime 6.5.  Then download and run CCleaner (www.ccleaner.com), it's cleanup and it's registry cleaner.
Reboot, then try to reinstall 7.5.1.

THANK YOU.  DID AS YOU SUGGESTED.  LOOKS LIKE A GOOD SET OF UTILITES.  HOWEVER, PROBLEM STILL EXISTS.   INSTALL GETS TO CONFIGURING WINDOWS, SITS THERE PRICESSING FOR ABOUT 75 SECONDS & THEN JUST DISAPPEARS.

Try using the Uninstall Programs under CCleaner's Tools section.

If that doesn't work, try this way:
1. Go to C:\Program Files, then delete the entire QuickTime folder.
2. Click Start - Find/Search - All Files And Folders, select the hard drive ( C: ) to look in, type in QuickTime, then click Find/Search. when the list of files appear, right-click on and delete all the ones that you confirm are associated with QuickTime.
3. Click Start - Run, type in REGEDIT, then click OK. Click the + in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Software
In the Software sub-menu, right-click directly on the Apple Computer entry, then click Delete - Yes.
(Note: If you click the + in the "Apple Computer" entry, you'll see "QuickTime" listed there)

If it still shows in your add/remove programs listing, then:
Go back into the registry and click the + in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Software
Microsoft
Windows
CurrentVersion
Uninstall
Start at the top of the Uninstall list and click on each sub-folder and look at the entries in the right pane. When you find the sub-folder for QuickTime, right-click it and delete it. The QuickTime entry will possibly be listed more than once in the Uninstall list, so keep going until you get to the bottom of the list.
Close the registry editor. The QuickTime entry should now be gone from Add/Remove Programs.

If you're still having problems, run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:

Hi Michko,  Thank you for your help.  But, still no luck.  Still hangs & then disappears at the configuring windows stage.   I deleted every reference to quicktime, itunes, & apple on my machine, using search & regedit & cclean & other cleanup & spyware utilities & resgistry cleaners   Quicktime does not show under all programs or in the control panel, but still no go,

Here's a link to Quicktime's support page:
http://www.apple.com/support/quicktime/

I did some more research on their page and have some more questions for you.  First, does the login you're installing Quicktime 7.1.5 under have admin permissions?  Next, was Quicktime 6.5 installed under a different user?

If 6.5 was installed under a different user, then this could cause issues with the uninstall (and the install of 7.1.5).  http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=880893&tstart=0

IF 6.5 was installed under a different admin account, then log back in using that account, and try the install of 7.1.5 again.  You may have to re-install an earlier version such as 6.5 again in order to uninstall i, which sounds counter-intuitive, but is sometimes necessary.

This link, although talking about Quicktime 7.0.1 on OSX may still be helpful:
http://fox-gieg.com/tutorials/2005/undo-quicktime-7/

The Windows Installer Cleanup Utility may also be useful:

Gave you a lot to consider and I'm sorry, wish we could narrow it down quickly.  Let me know how it goes.

Hi Michko,
Than you again for your help & persistence.   Your idea of using a previous version to leave a tag for the Windows IInstaller Cleanup Utility to work on finally did the trick.   Going back to 6.5 did not do it, but going to 7.1 did.   Here is what finally worked.   I downloaded version 7.1 from OldApps.com & tried to install it. It did not install clean & ended with a code 1608 error.   However, it did leave a reference to Quicktime that I was able to use the Windows Cleanup Utility to remove.  I then tried to install Quicktime 7.5 without Itunes & it installed fine.   I then installed Itunes 7 & it went fine & they are now both working.

Thanks again, nice work with you, best regards,   Clarke
