BI Query saved in Excel workbook

Can someone please clarify these 2 BI Query questions (version 7):
 1. If I open a query workbook that is stored on the BI server and refresh it and then save it to a  drive on a server other than the BI server as an .XLS file, can that XLS workbook still refresh the query and retrieve data into the XLS workbook on the non-BI server, as if it were on the BI server,  or only if it has certain connectivity, or not at all?  In other words, do I lose all BI functionality when saving it off of the BI server or can I save it as an XLS file on the BI server and still maintain the ability to refresh the query.
and 2. as above, at what point do I lose the capability to drill back into my transaction data in ECC.
Thanks!

The excel BI reports use extensive VBA programming to work, but to refresh data you will still need to be able to connect to the BI server. At what point you can't do that im not sure, you can save the Reports onto your workstation and still connect back in later .... tho im not sure that is what you are asking ...

Can you elaborate a little on what you mean by extensive VBA programming to work.  I am very good in VBA and regular Excel, but would be interested in the knids of things that need to be done in VBA for the BI to work in, not looking for code just examples.
Many Thanks
