does this just happen to the HP laptop with win XP sp2?

If so try the following;

Right click on My Computer
Left click on Manage
Under Computer Management left click on Device Manager
Expand Network Adapters
Right click on one of the adapters and disable the device and then try the other Network Adapter to see if it continues to drop your network connection. If disabling the device works, then re-enable the adapter, uninstall the adapter and then restart your computer.

Also try to see if disabling the wireless device while connected to your wired network will stop the network from dropping off.
