MSSQL, Backup Exec

Hello,

I have recently encountered problems with Backup Exec 11d, which lead to us uninstalling the product in order to attempt a fresh reinstall and hopefully resolve the glitches we were encountering. However when I went to reinstall the product the installation fails every time. The log shows that it cannot access the sql database.

To test this I downloaded a copy of SQL manager and attempted to connect to the SQL server (which is local  - I am using SBS 2003 ) However the software was unable to logon to the database using the administrator username and password.

I am now wondering if the SQL service is actually running at all .. But Do not know how to check this - looking at the services that are running there is an mssql$sbsmonitoring and a mssql$sharepoint but I couldn't see anywhere that I could restart the SQL service. I am personally more familiar with MySQL and so am obviously missing something.

Idealy I was attempting to create the database and then install to that which I was hoping would resolve the backup exec issues.

Can anybody see where I am going wrong here?

The innitial problem with backup exec was that it froze everytime that I attempted to add a new backup to disk folder.

It may not be of help here, but normally the freezing on new backup to disk folders comes when you are attempting to create a B2D folder on a drive that either you do not have permission to or that isn't still connected to the server.

I would expect to see a

mssql$backupexec

in your list of services. For some reason its not installing its instance of SQL Server. Are there any earlier messages in the log indicating that the SQL Server install failed or was skipped?

In the end resulted to installing mssql express and manually creatinga database forthe installto use. This worked and resolved the install problem.
