ITALICS Font That Remains Smooth at a Small Size

Hi there,

Is there any font that does not get jagged when down at 12pts or smaller in Italics?  For instance, Verdana, at 12pt Italics, all the characters looked jagged.  What font can I use so that at 12pt & smaller, the characters still look smooth?  A free font would be great.

Thanks,

:)

a466-ub52,

What type of document are you trying to set up? Verdana is primarily a screen font - as such, it is designed for maximum readability on screen, but not necessarily in print, etc.

Pretty much any font which has a specific "italics" version should retain it's characteristics when used in print layout. The problem comes in web use, where typically instead of switching to the italics version of the font, you get faux italics, where the font is simply tilted at a 20 degree angle. Since the font wasn't designed for this, you can get a pixellated effect.

Cheers,

ASKER

Hello LHerrou,

Thanks for your message!  Yes - that's the thing, using it on the web.  So - in a web situation is there any way to avoid the pixellated effect of italics?

Many thanks!

walkerke is correct, there's really not a lot of control that we have over fonts on the web, and diagonals or partial diagonals on small italics are going to give you "the jaggies" unless you have some form of smoothing. In images, you do this with anti-aliasing. On screen, there's not really anything you can do. :(
