Error message: the messaging interface has returned and unknown error if the problem persists restart outlook

When I try to create a new contact in Public Folders>Contacts and also when I try to reply to an internal Calendar meeting invite, I get the following message:

"The messaging interface has returned and unknown error. If the problem persists, restart Outlook."

I am unsure whether it may occur in other circumstances, but normal emailing seems fine.

I'm using Outlook 2003 SP2 on XP Pro SP2.

Are you current with Office updates?  The latest office service pack may fix this issue.

Yes, I have all the latest office and windows updates. The problem is also occuring on our Windows 2003 Standard server (Exchange).

Try opening Outlook in Safe Mode (http://grok.lsu.edu/Article.aspx?articleId=118).

Did you run a detect/repair from within Outlook?  A scanpst might also help (http://www.slipstick.com/problems/scanpst.asp).

You can also try opening Outlook with the cleanprofile, then the cleanviews command.  
Go to Start -> Run.  Type in outlook.exe /cleanprofile.  This will remove invalid profile keys and recreate default registry keys where applicable.  After done, close Outlook
Go to Start -> Run.  Type in outlook.exe /cleanviews.  This will restore default views (you will use any custom views).  When done, close Outlook.
Reopen Outlook and test.

I also saw one article that stated this error was caused by Google desktop, when it was uninstalled the problem was resolved.  Guessing you probably don't have Google desktop on this pc, but doesn't hurt to mention it.

The new profile worked for me, scanpst found errors and fixed them but still the prining failed. Created a new profile and printing worked fine.
Cause: Office 2007 was installed then outlook 2003 was installed without prior uninstalling Office 2007.
The outlook profile was created using "control panel' "mail" but it used the outlook 2007. After this uninstalled both office 2007 and 2003 and reinstalled office 2003, activated it and the profile remained setup in office 2003. (hence a new profile with office 2003 only installed resolved this issue)
