What is a PVDM2 Module?

Hi

I have a Cisco 2811 Router and have installed a VIC2-4FXO but the command voice-port 0/0/0 is not comming up. Now I have dones some research and it looks like I also need to install PVDM2-8 module.

Questions:
1) Can someone confirm that I need this module?
2) What does this module do?
3) whats the difference between PVDM and PVDM2
4) Whats the difference between PVDM2-8 and PVDM2-64 (which one do I need for 4FXO ports and 24 phones)
5) The installation in the router, do they need to be installed in pairs, individually
6) If install PVDM2-8, can I install a PVDM2-64 in the second slot later (Do they need to be the same)

1) Can someone confirm that I need this module?
YES.  The module

2) What does this module do?
Packet Voice DSP Module(PVDM) converts analog to digital.

3) whats the difference between PVDM and PVDM2
PVDM is the original model of the chip used by cisco in the 2600 routers.  PVDM2 is the new model used in the 2800, 3800 routers.

4) Whats the difference between PVDM2-8 and PVDM2-64 (which one do I need for 4FXO ports and 24 phones)
The difference between the PVDM2-8 and PVDM2-64 besides price is the number calls, amout of transcoding, and the number of conferences  the chip can handle
the following link will help you determine the correct number of PVDMs needed:

5) The installation in the router, do they need to be installed in pairs, individually
individually, will work.

6) If install PVDM2-8, can I install a PVDM2-64 in the second slot later (Do they need to be the same) Authored by: markgrinceri
