Question about Exchange 5.5 and IMC - also Exchange 2003 SMTP Connector

I am working on a project plan to phase out some old Exchange 5.5 servers and just want to run this by some other experts.  Please let me know if this sounds right...

In an environment with 4 Exchange 5.5 servers and 4 Exchange 2003 servers all in the same site and org.  Need to remove the Exchange 5.5 server that currently has the IMC instlaled.  I have two options, first is to install the IMC on one of the other Exchange 5.5 servers.  Option two, could I setup an SMTP connector on Exchange 2003 instead, and will Exchange 5.5 be able to use this connector for outgoing mail?  

I could use Exchange 5.5 for the IMC if I must, but if I can get away with setting up an SMTP connector on Exchange 2003, I'd rather do that, but need to make sure Exchange 5.5 will be able to use the SMTP connector on Exchange 2003.  

Any input?
