Hard drive not showing data

I am using a Maxtor 120 SATA hard drive and it is giving me trouble.  The first error was unmountable boot volume so I took it out and slaved it with another hard drive.  Now when I boot to the good hard drive in Windows XP the Maxtor drive shows up but only as a 10 MB hard drive.  Yes MB.  When I go to the recovery console and try to do a chkdsk it gives the error on drive and operation cannot be completed.  Any ideas

Go to http://www.seagate.com and download "seatools for dos".
Use the executable file to create a bootable floppy, and the boot the machine with the floppy.
Run the short and long tests ..stay away from the others if you want to salvage data.
This will at least tell you if the drive, cable, or controller are faulty or if the problem is bad sectors on the disk. It will also tell you if smart is enable and if any smart events have been triggered.

The short scan failed.  Then the long scan got to about 75 percent and said read failed.  At 75 percent it had about 95 errors.  Is there anything else I can try because the data on here is important and I am willing to try some aggressive methods.  Thanks!

You might try: http://www.getdataback.com to recovery you date. Dont do anything else on the drive until you have some tool to rescue your data. If the data is so important, give it to professional, and again do not write anything else on that drive if you wanted your data back.
