In Excel I need a conditional formatting where when entering a date, it compares it with today's date, and when it's earlier than today's date, change the fill color to red. How do I do it?

Use the Formula Is criteria with something like:
=AND(A1<>"",A1<TODAY())               assuming that A1 is the top left cell in the selection
The fill color is found on the Patterns tab
