SMTP Authentication using Outlook Express

From outlook express on the user properties when I set the option "My server requires authentication" only then my exchange server checks the authentication and allow the authenticated users to access mail.
But the problem is when I uncheck the options "My server requires authentication" it also allows the user to send and recive mail. My outlook settings isTools-Accounts- User-Properties-Server-IncomingIMAP-(10.10.10.10 Exchange serverIP; where IMAP is configured.OutgoingmailSMTP(10.10.10.10 Exchange serverIP)
My aim is to allow authenticated user to send mail using outlook express while the user is out of office.
My schenario is PIX-FE-BE exchange cluster uisng exchange 2003.
Please suggest me what configuration I am missing for  my exchange

I wouldn't be using Outlook Express in this scenario, the preferred remote access method for Exchange is RPC over HTTPS. Too many chances for the user to lose all of their email with OE.

What method are you using for authentication?

username
domain\username
username@domain.com

something else?

Simon.
