I am looking for an application that can parse a directory of XML files and load the data into a MySQL database running on LInux.

I am not sure a generic program would do the job for you. In most cases, the parser will need to be aware of the file and database format in order to successfully make the transfer.

If these are custom XML files, you will probably need to write the parser/loader yourself. You can use the SimpleXML (http://php.net/simplexml) for easy parsing.
