A brazilian scientific divulgation magazine published something along the lines: "open-source programmers do not sell open-sourced softwares, but do not buy open-sourced softwares too", but how do they earn money to drink and eat???

They have contributors, e.g., they put links on their website for people to contribute if they wanna contribute by paying through Paypal or something else. They also earn by putting advertisements on their product's websites, e.g.:

http://sourceforge.net/

Also, many do their open-source programming in their spare time.  It can be a hobby.

Sometimes a business will hire someone who will work for that business for part of their workday work on the open-source software the other part.  They see having the open source expert as being a benefit to their company, and usually the particular open source program has something to do with the core business of the company.  Transmeta hired Linus Torvalds, and I'm sure there are many other examples I can't think of right this second.
