"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

If u want to query parent-child tables and simply display it in gridview, use join. I mean fetch the values from db trhu an SP using JOIN.
Datarelation is used when u have a dataset with dift tables. That means, two tables with parent table values and child table values. Now u can use datarelation to show it in grid view. To make it clear, think u r displaying a list of questions in a page, and u want to display the answer just below it when a user clicks on the question. In these type of scenarios, u can use data relation.
