When do you use JOIN queries and when do you use DataRelation objects when working with Gridview?

If u want to query parent-child tables and simply display it in gridview, use join. I mean fetch the values from db trhu an SP using JOIN.
Datarelation is used when u have a dataset with dift tables. That means, two tables with parent table values and child table values. Now u can use datarelation to show it in grid view. To make it clear, think u r displaying a list of questions in a page, and u want to display the answer just below it when a user clicks on the question. In these type of scenarios, u can use data relation.
