Router Stops Talking to my Cable Modem

In general, regardless of the brand name of router or cable modem, when a router (wired/wireless) stops talking to a cable modem, even tho' the cable modem seems to indicate it can 'see' the router, what causes this to happen?

The same as when a PC has a crash and needs a reboot, the router or cable modem has crashed! Both, cable modems and routers have builtin CPU's and Memory and they use software to operate, just like PC's. They can crash just like PC's too.

thanks for your suggestion genius; however, i've already shut down the router, unplugged power to cable modem for 2 minutes, plugged modem back in, waited for a steady cable lite, plugged in the router, and waited for them to start commuting for 3/4 minutes, but they still won't communicate.

Have you checked with connecting a PC directly to the modem to see if that works?

yes, connecting a computer directly to the modem does not work; i simply do not understand how a router can be working one minute, and quit talking to the modem the next.

i messed up that last reply; connecting a pc directlly to the modem DOES work, but the router just stopped talking to the modem. i have reset both devices, being sure to bring the modem back up first and wait for a steady cable lite before plugging in the router, but the still don't communicate.
