Dear Experts,

I have purchased two IBM xeries 335 servers from eBay. They look fine although there is no VGA output at all? Is this normal? I have never come across a server with no VGA? Can I add one?

This is fairly urgent as we need to get the syste, up and runnin ASAP.

Hello espoke:

Documentation on that unit is here:

http://www.mta.ca/torch/pdf/extra/x335+installation+guide.pdf

Reading the documentation, you will find that the server uses a  CableChain Technology (C2T) breakout cable that combines keyboard, mouse and monitor connector into one plug - I think some are available on eBay.

Here's a detail from the IBM manual:

-----------------------------------------

To connect a monitor, keyboard, and pointing device to the server, use a Cable
Chain Technology (C2T) breakout cable, which is provided in the optional C2T cable
kit. The following illustration shows a C2T breakout cable. The end of the cable with
a single connector attaches to the C2T OUT connector on the rear of the server.
22 IBM xSeries 335 Type 8676: Installation Guide
The other three connectors connect to the monitor, keyboard, and pointing device.
You can share one monitor, keyboard, and pointing device (such as a mouse)
among up to 42 servers using C2T interconnect cables. You can connect up to 23
servers together to create an Advanced System Management (ASM) interconnect
network (ASM bus). The bus requires that at least one of the servers has an
optional Remote Supervisor Adapter installed. You can create additional ASM
buses, each consisting of up to 23 servers if at least one server in each bus has an
optional Remote Supervisor Adapter installed.
For more details about connecting the server to a C2T chain, creating an Advanced
System Management (ASM) interconnect network, and sharing a monitor, keyboard,
and pointing device between multiple servers, see the section about cabling the
server in the Option Installation Guide.
