XP ethernet connection & security

Hello Experts,

I just connected 2 xp pro systems with cross ethernet and have a couple of questions (new to this):

1. If I share a drive on machine A, I can only map it on machine B when a password exists on A. Normally I don't have a password set, allowing the machine just to boot straight through. Is there a way round this? Blank password was not accepted.

2. When I share the drive, file and printer sharing is auomatically set on as an exception in the xp firewall settings. What does this actually mean with respect to security from the internet (machine A is always connected)?

Many thanks!

Two Winxp desktops with cross cable configuration :-

Configure the workgroup network configuration using static IP like , comp A= 192.168.0.1 &   2> Compb=192.168.0.2 then using small office network wizard to configure the workgroup ( right click to My Network places>propeties>click on small office network >configure with this wizard as per your requirement so you share your Internet access ( ICS) and give the workgroup name -default is MSHOME and select the option for file & printer sharing then check with ping command both are on the network and share the folder as you said and access from other pc.

For security winxp sp2 built in with firewall and you have to give the local admin password for both pc's for direct accesseing you configure the same admin password on both pc's. And install the good Antivrus like  symantec / Quickheal version 9.0 and monitor the updates and also configure the automatic update for windows it contents the security patches and install spybot search & destroy on bothe pc's .
Winxp SP2 is good its properly monitor the windows updates / ANtivrus monitoring and firewall protection.
From internet viruses come from the mails /non-standard sites so directly delete the unknown /spam mails from your mail client ( outlook or outlook express ) and if you are acessing the mails from web then risk is low and  check the attachment of mails to downlaod.

Thanks,:
All in the first paragraph is done:

>configure the same admin password on both pc's
But a password has to exist yes, theres no way around this?

>select the option for file & printer sharing
And the security implications of this re others on the internet accessing my files?

If you do not want to share the drive on this two pc's then you can access the pc by UNC like start>run>\\computername\d$ so $ is the admnstrator access rigthts.

Let me clarify - are you saying then that by enabling file and printer sharing and allowing this as an exception in the firewall, I am exposing my files to the internet? Please be clear and specific on this - I am a unix user, windows is not familiar to me.

No you ae not exposing the files to internet ...dont worry , iam saying that donot share the drive manually ( right click to drive >share) you can access the drive by \\computer name\d$ menas for only Local administrator and admin password is necessary ,do not make blank.
