Reduce PDF 17mb to 1mb

I have to reduce a PDF from 17mb to about 1mb.  It will be downloaded for print by consumers.  I'm using Adobe Acrobat 8 Pro.  It seems everything I try is way to extreme (100k) or doing not much (down to 12mb).  This was created in Quark and sent to me.  I am on a PC.  Thanks

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Hi,

There isn't a magic trick to decrease pdf file size, however, there are a few priciples that can help,
use an image-editing program such as photoshop to decrease image sizes, this will require the use of noise
reduction filters and Gassian blurring for best compression before saving as a jpg file.
You can try OCR, but that will require some working on your side (fixing letters here and there)
other than that, you just have to play with the output quality / size adequate.
or better yet, do not use pdf. this is the simplest solution. you can create html files in which you can include the images, this way one wouldn't have to print the photos (unless he wants too).
You can also create those .chm files that many programs use.
