Linksys Wireless b mode? or g mode?

I have a new Compaq Presario V6000 with a Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini PCI card in it.  It came from the store with Microsoft Vista loaded on it.  The computer detected my Linksys wireless network system and operated in the "g" mode perfectly.  I cleaned off the hard drive and installed Ubuntu 7.04 "Feisty Fawn" and it took some work, but I did get the wireless up and running.  Here's the problem.  When I connect to the network via Ethernet cable, I get lightning speed.  But when I use the wireless, I only get about 25 kbps.  Real slow.  I looked at some hardware settings and saw that in was operating at 11mbps.  Someone told me that was the "b" mode of my wireless.  How do I get my wireless card to work in the "g" mode?  Faster in other words?
Thanks,
Chris

Someone has told you wrong, even b mode you could get faster, not slower than dial-up modem in history. Please see the link http://www.microsoft.com/athome/moredone/wirelesstips.mspx

I never said it was slower or faster than dial up.  The wireless is much slower than when I'm pluged up to the Ethernet  cable.  My question is can I change the mode that the wireless is operating in (b or g).  Don't forget, I'm not using Microsoft, I'm using Linux with the Ubuntu distro.
Thanks,
Chris
