I have a small client whose single DC had an untimely death yesterday. Fortunately I recently P2V-ed the server, and I was successfully able to boot the virtual machine without issues. I have a successful system state backup from the previous night (NTBackup BKF file), which I want to restore authoritatively to the VM version of the DC.

Does anyone know what steps I should go through to successfully authoritatively restore the system state to a DC using NTBackup?

I have booted into Directory Services Restore Mode, catalogued the BKF file in NTBackup, and restored the system state to it's original location, but it's the NTDSutil commands I am unsure of...

Is this a 2003 DC?  If this is the only DC in you environment, you should perform a primary restore by placing a check next to "When restoring replicated data sets, mark the restored data as the primary data for all replicas."  This will ensure that the SYSVOL share restores properly.

With only a single DC in the mix you don't need to worry about doing an authoritative restore.

It is a Win 2003 DC. Is that check box included in th NTBackup restore process?

I restored the system state and checked the "When restoring replicated data sets, mark the restored data as the primary data for all replicas." check box, but the VM server hangs on reboot. Is this something to do with restoring system state from a physical server to it's virtual equivalent?

Restoring to dissimilar hardware, even when it's virtual hardware, is never fun.  You'll probably need to run a repair install of the OS.
