Send and receive button missing in Outlook 2003

In outlook 2003 my send and receive button is missing and f9 does not send the mail. Thsi is on my main pc. I am receiving email and can send mail using my laptop logging into the same account. We use windows 2000 server with exchange server and xp locally. I have tried to add the button from the customize menu but htere is no button to add. This is a recent install of 2003 and previously I had been trialling 2007 office (which is not great) so I uninstalled it.

Have you tried a new Outlook profile?
If not, try that, then a new Windows profile.
You could also try a detect and repair, but if you have had trial software on the machine you may be looking at wiping the machine.

Simon.
Go to View menu, then Toolbars...then make sure the standard toolbar is checked. Then, on the far right of the standard toolbar, there should be a little arrow, then you can add/remove buttons...choose the send/receive button. Also try "resetting" the toolbar (at the bottom).

You may have accidentally deleted the Send/Receive button from your toolbar.

Here are the steps necessary to restore it:
1) Open outlook.
2) From the Tools menu, select Customize.
3) Select the Commands tab.
4) From the Category list, select Tools.
5) From the Commands list, select Send/Receive.
6) Drag Send/Receive to your Outlook toolbar.
7) Click the Close button.

-OR-

You may not have configured an account, in which case the send/receive button would not be present. I assume that you have an account configured in the above steps\.

Hope this helps!
If the above does not work, I would take a look at some of these command-line switches, which may help you reset some outlook functions to their default factory settings.
Sorry, here is the link to the above mentioned page:

Alas none of the above have worked. In fact now, having deleted my profile, I cannot create a new one as I get the message "There was an error locating one of the items needed to perform the operation" after I have put in my exchange server and user. I have done a repair also but this has not fixed the problem. Thanks for your time.
Use the Help Menu in Outlook 2003 and click on Activate Product... that is where the message will appear.

Have you tried the Detect and Repair option in Outlook 2003?
Help > Detect and Repair
You may need the Office CD to complete the process.

If Detect and Repair fails:
Have you tried a new Profile in Outlook 2003 to see if Send/Receive works there?
With Outlook 2003 closed, create a new Profile,
Control Panel > Mail Icon
Change the selection to: Prompt for a Profile to be used

Show Profiles > Add
Recreate your e-mail account.

Start Outlook 2003 and select the new Profile.
Let us know if the Send/Receive button appears.
that solution worked for some people with exactly the same problem...

To explain the command-line switches further:

If you are trying to do firstrun then:

1. Go to run and type either cmd or command to open the command prompt window

2. Find out where Outlook is on your PC - it may be different for different PCs. For example this is the standard location: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\Outlook.exe

However, note that Program Files has a space. This is a long file path / name.

Therefore you have to type in the double quotes before and after the command:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\Outlook.exe" /FirstRun

And you don't even have to type the word /switch - that is a placeholder for the real switch e.g. /FirstRun
I strongly believe that this is a problem not with the existing outlook 2003 but its with outlook2007. The way things are done in 2007 is very much different thus throwing off all of the normal conventional methods. All of the menu bars in 2007 are not on the standard toolbars but on the user pref bars.

Try to play around with the custom toolbars in 2003 and hopefully one of the toolbars will have those icons.
Try this to bring back the Send/Receive button:

1) Open Outlook.
2) On the Tools menu, select Customize.
3) Select the Commands tab.
4) In the Category list, select Standard
5) In the Commands list, select Send/Receive.
6) Drag the Send/Receive button to your Outlook toolbar.
7) Click the Close button.

To create a new Exchange profile, go ahead and delete all other profiles:
1) Open Control Panel.
2) Double-click on MAIL
3) In the Mail Setup window, click the Show Profiles button
4) Remove any profiles displayed by clicking each one and then clicking the Remove button.
5) Create a new profile by clicking the Add button, typing a name for the profile, and following the prompts for Exchange Server information, etc.

Let us know if you get everything back up and running again...
