Dell PowerEdge SC440 Processor Upgrade Question.
More of a question. I have a Dell poweredge SC440 and want to upgrade the processor to one of the pentium D's that support VT (Virtual Technology). I see that dell offers an upgrade from the 915 (which I have) to the 935 but neither offer VT. But you also offer the XEON upgrade processor which DOES offer the VT. I guess the question is, can I upgrade to a Pentium D 940 processor instead of the 935, and will it utilize the VT technology in the processor.. I think they make a 960 too.. Xeon's are too expensive if I can just install a better pentium d it would be better.

Call Dell Tech Support, give them your Service Tag and ask them to identify the motherboard make/model. You could also try a Belarc Report www.belarc.com .. Most likely it is an Intel board but once you get the make and model then you can check the manufactures site or tech support to see if you can use the new chip. Only other issue is the Dell OEM bios will it use the upgarde correctly. Most likely answer from Dell would be no, afterall they want you to purchase that nice new DuoCore. If the box is still under warranty you HAVE to buy from Dell any upgrades or you can void that.
its a Dell Motherboard.. and Dell.. wanted to send me to sales for a Xeon. Unless anyone else has any suggestions, I am going to buy the 940 with VT and see if it works.. something tells me it will..

It's a Dell Branded motherboard.. they get most of the motherboards from Intel.
