Can't copy .pst file.

System: XP Pro, SP2
Outlook 2003
LARGE .pst file (3.3 GB)
Receive the following error when trying to copy it for backup:
“Error copying file or folder, Cannot copy outlook: the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."
I don't think it's a file size issue as it has backed up with 3+ GB before.

ycguy1117,

Where are you copying the file to? Are you sure the file is 3.3 GB. If it is close to 4 GB, and if the external drive that you are copying to is FAT32 formatted, then the maximum size of a file is 4GB. Make sure you are copying to an NTFS formatted drive.
ycguy1117,

If still no joy, use Unlocker to unlock the file

Be careful not to delete the file.

looks like a hard drive issue, might be some data corruption on your hard drive.
go to Start - Run and type chkdsk /r c: (assuming c drive has the pst)
this will force a check disk to run and verify for errors
it will say that it can not run now if you want it to run on next reboot
say yes and reboot
once checkdisk has completed, try and copy the pst file again.

if this doesn't work you can try this:
open MS outlook
create a new PSt file - new - outlook data file
go to file - Import and export and export the entire pst to the new one you just created
you can also use the archive function but import and export should do

good luck

P.S. might want to back up your entire hard drive soon just in case...

1. I can back up the hard drive except for the .pst file, which is the problem.
2. yes, the file ie 3.3 gigs and the external hard drive is NTFS.
3. I can't even make a copy of the .pst and save it on the desktop.
4. I get the same I/O error if i try to copy the .pstit while in safe mode.

More to come.
Moving large file may require the use of Temp folder. Your Temp folder could be full. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Temp folder and delete all the files.
Hi ycguy1117,

I think elgrullo420 is on the right track. You could have some corruption on the hard drive where the pst file is sitting. The problem with a situation like this is, you can run chkdsk but risk further corruption of the hard drive and the pst file. You have to decide how valuable the emails are and decide if you want a data recovery service to retrieve the file.  The cost is usually $800 to $1500.

Before you do anything, try elgrullo420's suggestion of opening the pst directly from Outlook. This will give you a good indication of whether there is corruption on the hard drive. If it opens just fine, then perhaps something else is going on. Maybe corruption on the drive where the file is being copied to.
Or, did you try war1's suggestions of ownership and temp folder?

If the file does not open in Outlook and you decide the cost of recovery too high, follow elgrullo420's suggestion with chkdsk.

If anything posted above helps you recover your file, please award the points to either war1 or elgrullo420. I just added my opinion here and didn't give offer new methods to recover the file, (except data recovery).

cheers,
frankco
Hi, All,
The strange thing is that i don't have any problems with Outlook aside from trying to copy it or back it up.
Will exporting it attempt to export a copy and leave the original where it is?
Thanks
Exporting will export a copy and leave original where it is.
ycguy1117, any update?
Hi ycguy1117,

If it opens fine in Outlook, the file is not corrupted. Make sure you follow war1's suggestions.
Did you check to see if you have ownership of the file?

cheers,
frankco
Well, the problem might have been solved, sort of.
The hard drive crashed a few days ago.
I was not able to export .pst; another error message.
I have a replacement hard drive and after the back-ups are loaded i'll see what became og outlook.
I will report back shortly.
Thanks, everyone.
What a drawn out saga.
Hard drive was replaced by HP under Warranty.
It was bad.
Have another one in; they promise it is good.
Here's the new problem.
After restoring backed-up files, folders, and programs, nothing comes up on the desktop but the desktop background and an attempt by windows installer to install something.
In safe mode, however, everything works, that would work in safe mode - no drivers, etc. so no
printing.
Any ideas?
