Compression option grayed out in Backup Utility in Windows 2003, how come?

Last Modified: 2013-11-14
When I create a backup thru Windows 2003 Backup Utility, on the screen where you can check off to verify data, there is a section that says "Use hardware compression, if available", but it's grayed out. I am saving to a separate hard drive that has been formated with "Enable Compression" and the drive shows in bright blue when viewing from windows explorer. So how come I still can't backup using compression?
