I am having a bad problem trying to install windows xp on a old computer I got off of ebay

setup keeps crashing halfway through before I even get to the serial or any personal settings
the error I am getting is

something along the lines of
Error: sxs.dll: syntax error in manifest or policy file "D:\I386\asms\1000\msft\windows\gdiplus\gdiplus.man" on line 4.
xxx
Error:: installation Failed: D:\I386\asms.  Error Message: A component's file does not match the verification information present in the component manifest

do you all have any suggestions as to why this error is happening?

is the old pc got data on the hard drive if so delete it all by using the setup disk to format the disk before setup continues. Do you know if your setup cd works ok elsewhere?

What hardware do you have in the pc I mean this could be down to hardware that xp doesn't like. Did it have xp on it before do you know? The errors could just be erroneous if its hardware as it could just be when its trying to install a driver at the same point every time.

the harddrive is clean when I installed from the setupcd I told it to format using NTSC

I am not sure on the hardware config
its standard stuff motherboard hd cdrom network card graphics card lpt1 card
this occurs when the hardware installed in the box is not really friendly.. if it has a modem or extra cards, remove them, then install windows, then after it is completely installed, re-install the extra cards..

these errors could be  either  a bad CD, or the hardware config is different from that of the original (windows installing) configuration.
Can also be bad ram and cannot read properly.
test your memory modules:

Might pay to create a copy of your install CD to make sure it's 100% ok

D:\I386\asms\1000\msft\windows\gdiplus\gdiplus.man" on line 4

how can I test the cd to see if it works
Hi, either take a look at the surface of the disc, is there any oily marks stains scratches?
Make a new copy of it and see if that fixes anything.
I dont know of any other way as it is a setup disc. There is no way to verify the integrety of the contents itself only the disc apart from using it.
If you had a spare hdd and a good known working  2nd pc you run setup on that and but not regester it of course.
