File Protection

I have a USB stick with some files on in that I want to give to another department, but I would like to be able to protect the files so that they can't be modified or deleted.

I have tried several different file protection programs, but they only work while the USB stick is in my PC, as soon as it is inserted into another PC the files can be deleted, so how do I go about doing this.

There is a switch on the USB usually that allows u to lock usb so no one can change/delete the files from the USB. do u have that small switch ?
u can also  make a PDF file of the file u are transfering to restrict writing to that file.

asaeed - The concept of write protecting a USB drive the same as a floppy or tape sounds good, but having used many different USB sticks I haven't yet seen a switch.

All the files on the USB are pdf's, there is also a small program that is run from Autoplay that allows you to select which pdf to open, I just want to write protect everything

yes some USB have these switches. my friend just told me that kingston has a utility that can write protect the USB by password also.

I dont have a kingston USB stick, so can't do any of that.

The reason I classified this question as moderately difficult was because I am an experienced techy and I've already spent several hours trying lots of different protection programs and playing with the file attributes without any success and I'm hoping that someone will have had this problem before and managed to solve it.

some usb's do come with write protect switch, so turn it on and put some glue in it so it wont change, why dont you write a cd instead.
there are a few software available which would protect your data from changing but nobody can protect it from being formatted, its just impossible without blocking the write protect switch.

I've looked at 3 of my USB sticks and none have a switch (damn), I don't think you can format a USB stick as I've tried before and I got an error message saying it couldn't do it.
Which software do you think will protect the files ??

To format the drives.....

Yea, only my memorex has a write protect switch on it....

Asides from marking them as "Read Only" there isnt much to do about it. CD would be the best way to go as stated above....

asaeed - Thanks for the link, but unfortunately this software is no different to some others I have tried and all it does is to password protect the files, if you dont know the password you can't see the files and that's no good for me as I need to run a small start-up program so the files must be visible and not encrypted.

I have now spent much too long on this problem and I have to reluctantly conceed that although I can protect them while the flash memory is connected to my pc, as soon as it is pluggeg into another pc if someone wants to delete them then there is nothing to stop them.

I will ask to have this question PAQ'd.
