Check the connection / cable for any visible dirty, damage might occur first. If it is ok, remove it in device manager and let windows automatically detect and install driver again.

Is there a chance is was plugged into a live line (phone). I've had user do that and there is no error in device manager, yet they cannot pull an IP and no light on the NIC.

Assuming you have Windows XP you might try to unistall the device, update the drivers, and reinstall. The possibility of driver corruption would seem to be the first thing to eliminate.

Also, do you have another computer to check on that wall jack or can you take your computer to another known good work room. I have seen cases where work environment rj-45 jacks are accidentally disabled at the router.

What I was getting to about the live line was that the NIC may be blown out.
