rdate timeout for any server

i get timeout for rdate -s justanynptserver OR rdate -u -s justanynptserver
tried on 3 different linux pc's, different kernels, different centos dists, only worked on windows.
i do have iptables set, but all outgoing traffic is allowed.

what could be wrong ?

rdate requires that the time service is running, not the NTP service.
(or you need to start the time service on the various unix time providers, it's off by default).
for the ntp service you'll need ntpdate
