Can I use an underscore in a computername for a server in Window 2003 Server. It is currently Windows 2000 Server. The server name is companyname_server. I need to retain the name as it is our mail server and would require a lot of reconfig. Are there any issues with W2K3 servers as I am going to retain this name

If you're running DNS on this server, you'd probably be better off going through the task of renaming it.

Then you should be fine.
The worst case scenario: you upgrade, and something doesn't work.

Make sure you've got a complete good backup when you start the upgrade, then if something goes wrong, you can go back using the backup, and work on renaming it first.
