Hi,
Just as a test, will it let you back up the config using TFTP? This will prove that the communication is working between the router and the pc...

copy start tftp
 ip address
 filename

I would also check that the solarwinds tftp server is set to send and receive files and that it is not restricted to a certain IP range etc.

Do you have basic IP connectivity? I.e Can you PING between the devices?

RPPreacher

How big is the file?  Which tftp app are you using?
Solarwinds TFTP server has a file size limitation of 32 MB.

Yes, there is ping working from both directions.
TFTP is set to send and recieve files and not restricted to any ip add.
Here is the output when i tried to copy the running conf to tftp, which was ok:

Hi experts:
I reinstalled the Nic on the pc and now the router and the pc can ping each other, how ever the ios upadate is still faling with the same message on the tftp server, "Transmit error while sending 10.0.0.1 :The connection is reset by remote side.".

I also have tried another tftp server called pumpkin, following is the error message for Pumkin tftp server:
 "[06/02/07 19:11:11] PumpKIN started

hi experts:

Jim_Coyne:
i couldnt try your solution, i go 1 step forward and 2 steps backwards. for some reason ,i cant even make a proper connection b/w the 2 devices: Now i can ping router's eth. ip from the pc, but cant ping PC's nic from the router, I have tried to uninsatll the firewall also, but the ping from router is not reaching the pc, so at this stage i cant go to the next step (which i actually started the thread for) of upgrading the IOS.
And it s happening on 2 Pc, both the computers can ping the routerbut router cant see the pc. (i tried connecting 1 pc at a time).

Regards.
Jim_Coyne

Are you connected directly (cross-over cable) or is there a switch / hub involved? If so, what model switch / hub?

mushi_nz

ASKER
i am connecting directly using a crossover cable, there is no switch/hub involved.

Let me just review this with you:

Check your cable, is it correct? Any loose connections?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_crossover_cable

 Configure the router:

int e0/0  <----change to correct port
ip address 10.0.0.1 255.255.255.0 <----Make sure the mask is correct
duplex full
speed 100 <---- You won't have a speed option if it doesn't support 100
exit
wri mem

Configure the computer:

ip address is set to: 10.0.0.2 <----Make sure the mask is correct
speed matches the router
duplex matches the router

kwnelson

I experienced the same error using solarwinds tftp server. My fix was uninstall solarwinds and install cisco tftp v1.1, at first received same error. But after timeout retry#2, I was able to copy the image from the cisco tftp server successfully. I hope this helps.

Hi experts:
sorry for a delaied reply..

Jim_Coyne:
I hvae checked and the cable is a crossover and when connected its not loose.
I think the subnet mask you gave is not correct . I have set it to 10.0.0.1 255.0.0.0
The speed option is not avilable, so i guess its not supported.
So i chnaged the speed and duplex on the NIC from auto sense to 10Mbps an that did the trick, the ping went thru and the process of upgrading went smoothly.

Although there was another issue after that but i will start a new post after for that as is differnet to this.
Thnaks to you , this problem is resolved.
