Security of server room

My question is mainly to get others professional opinion so I may give a better and thorough explanation to the big bosses.

- I have a small server room with all the basics - patch panels, switchs (5), and a server rack with about 12 servers growing to 15 in a month.  These servers are the DCs, Exhchange, file & print servers, etc- (the important servers).  There is no AC or ventilation in the room, so you can imagine it's an oven.

- My company also has a larger room with testing servers (approx. 30+ servers), and with AC or ventilation.  These servers are access physically all day long and on opposite side of building.

My boss is planning to get AC units and proper ducting for the servers,  BUT my boss wants to put my servers in the same room with the testing servers, in order to save money and not install 2 AC units and ducting.

How can I explain to my boss that my servers should stay in the room they are in, which can be secured and not have the daily traffic around them.   I only go to the server room to change backup tapes, which I haven't done in a while because the heat and dust has ruined a brand new tape drive.

Any opinion or insight in this issue??  Thanks  a lot in advance....

I do have a storage server with 1TB of storage, but I want the tape drive to work so we can have backups offiste.  I am giving them all options:
- Keeping it in current room, that is wired to be secured with a card system. And perhaps getting this large AC unit and using piping to split the cooling from the testing room and the current server room.
- getting a cage would acceptable, but we also have to get additinoal circuits installed because the testing group blows circuits on their side of the building.

The patch panel will stay in the current room.  My boss wants to run fiber to other side of office to the new location for the new room.    I want this moved or  cooled asap because of fear of the disk drives failing.

I agree with setver64, just put them in lockable racks. If you visit a hosting center you'll see servers belonging to all sorts of different companies sat side by side in rows of racks. They aren't normally caged away from each other due to the cost of floor space.

Well... I think since this is an opinion question and not something needing hard facts per se, I would think a split would be more appropriate.

In my opinion ... yes it's an opinion question ;-)
