Could be your anti-virus or similar program that is locking that drive. Dsiable the AV as a test and see if that helps.

did you look in task manager what process is using your disk? then you can stop it there

Ok, thank you LeeTutor I have been meaning to test unlocker, but I haven't had a chance yet. Nobus how can you use task manager to see what process is using the disk? I usually use filemon by sysinternals for that.
nobus

that is even better

BEATUIFUL - you rock LeeTutor - Unlocker works like a charm. But why does it try to connect to a DNS server - is it safe, no spyware etc?

I haven't tried Unlocker; I only recommended it because I saw a web page with a similar problem in Vista that said it worked for them.  Incidentally, for XP, what I HAVE used in place of Unlocker is a program called WhoLockMe:

WhoLockMe Explorer Extension

If you're having problems deleting a file, you might consider using WhoLockMe. The program has a handy Explorer extension, which shows which Windows process is locking the file. One click kills the process (a virus, Trojan horse, spyware, or perhaps a dialog box enhancer), after which you can delete the tenacious hanger-on.

Version: 1.04 Beta
