sound device problem on HP pavillon dv2000

I'm trying to play a music CD as usual on my laptop as usual and I getting the message below:

Windows media player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device device installed on your computer, I might be use by another program, or It might not be functioning  properly.

I am a HP pavillon dv2000. can you help me sort this problem out, please!!

Does your computer play any sound? (ie windows startup/logoff sound)

If so:
I would get the latest windows media player (from microsoft.com) and install it in case of corruption
make sure you have the latest direct x drivers

If not I would go into device manager (windows key + pause/break simultaneously, hardware tab, device manager), drill down to your sound cards and make sure they are functioning properly (no question marks/exclamation marks)

go to HP support website, software and driver downloads, type in the model of notebook and op system and download the audio drivers for installation.

Hope this helps,

Cheers,

This is the error:

?
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling WMP and your sound card drivers? You can reinstall WMP from:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/0/9/5/0953E553-3BB6-44B1-8973-106F1B7E5049/wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe
I don't know where to find your sound card drivers but you can search on the HP website.

It doesn't work. even when I try playing with realplayer I get an error message

When you get that message from WMP, chances are your OS isn't detecting your sound card at all, so nothing that requires sound will work anyway.
You can verify this in Control Panel -> Sounds & Multimedia
It will say No Audio Device or something.
In any case, give re-installing the sound drivers a try.
From what you have told us, I assume this link will be useful.

I assumed Windows XP, but if you got it with Vista, then just browse for the Vista drivers for your laptop at that webpage.
