Dreamweaver will not allow updated file to be saved - says CONFLICT ??

I am no longer able to use PREVIEW facility in Dreamweaver for my pages. The page cannot be saved prior to preview because there is a  conflict - seeming the page is being used by another application - BUT IT IS NOT. It gets worse, I cant even save the page at all - regardless of the PREVIEW facility - again its this conflict problem

I would class myself as a reasonably competent user of dreamweaver, so I dont think its something dumb on my part .... (well, anything is possible !! says he modestly)

I am using Dreamweaver 2004 with windows XP pro, on a new machine

Has anyone else experienced this problem ?? Any ideas greatly appreciated

Hi jameskane,

I've never seen what you describe.  A couple of questions:

1) Are you previewing htm / html or a dynamic page?

2) When you go to preview, hit control-alt-delete and bring up the Windows Task Manager and look at the applications and processes lists.  Do you have duplicate entries for DW in either of those?

3) Can you do a Save As or is that blocked too?

Hi Jason,
many thanks for the reply.
1) I am using HTML
2) Dont understand DW ?
3) I can do a save as and that works. I then make sure that all applications are off, and try to delete the
original file which I could not save - but it STILL says its being used by another application.

If I restart the computer, I can then delete the original file and then take the file I had saved as "save as" and save it to the original file name.

Its a bit bizarre.

I think also, although this may fail as I keep trying it ,  that if I save the file being edited BEFORE I try and do the PREVIEW - then I dont have the problem  - ie SAVE first and then do the PREVIEW

Hummm, strange !!

What I am looking for in the task manager is DW running in two instances when you hit "Preview"

That indicates (usually) a corrupt install.

Do you have a Test Server configured in the site definition such as apache or iis running locally on your computer? If this is the case, permissions may be configured incorrectly. This kind of error can be generated when the application server has write permissions to the files in root or the system is the owner of the files.

Permissions can be stuffed up when you extract the website's files into root from an archive file then try to work with them from there. I believe SYSTEM is the owner of these files in such a scenario and the SYSTEM is accessing these files via the app server once they're dished up in a browser.

Try copying the website files to another directory > deleting all original files > copy (not move) files back to website directory > check permissions.

On a windows platorm, the bare minimum set of permissions required are:

SYSTEM: full control (not owner)
You: full control (owner)
IUSR_YourComputerName: read/execute
IWAM_YourComputerName: read/execute

Jason, no - multiple instances of DW is not the problem - I had in fact checked this out a number of times.
I find that if I save the file I have just worked on in dreamweaver AND THEN  do the preview it works fine. But if I do the preview before I save (sounds daft I know - as the preview saves first before it presents the page on the browser)  then I have the problem.

V2media, I am using dreamweaver and a the  desktop server associated with it. I have coldfusion installed and use that for dynamic pages - but not in this case - just html. Given this, I'm not so sure what you suggest will help ??

I'm quite happy to live with saving before doing the PREVIEW - but its strange.

Well, the additional info you posted helps to define the problem a bit more. DW doesn't have a server platform associated with it. When you use Preview from DW, is the protocol of the URL in the address bar reading File: or http:// ?

If it's http://, a webserver is serving the page to your browser and could mean a permissions issue; if it's File:, the browser is merely opening the file directly from the HDD and permissions is less likely to be an issue.

What I suggest will help in that following those directions will ensure you are the owner of the files, not the SYSTEM account.

http://localhost:8500/cfide/loisclymer/index_fr.htm   .. this is the address which is put into the browser window. Can it be a permission problem if I am able to do a "save as" ? and /or if I can get it to work by doing a save before the Preview ?

Hi Jason1178, first off, thanks again for taking the time on this mundane problem !!

I think I now understand the problem better due to your help.

Checked the prefs and the box was UNTICKED. So I ticked it and I am now able to use the preview directly without having to save the file before hand. BTW, the "save teh file beforehand" approach is not infallable - I ran into the problem after using it for some time.

SO, heres my theory (box unticked):

First off the page I am using is a heavy layered page - lots of stuff doing on - must have around 20 layers. SO, it takes time to create the preview page - whether I do preview before save or after save.

In my impatience, if the preview page did not appear, I would just run another preview - which seemed to speed things up. BUT the inherent problem with that is, the first preview page gets stuck in trying to create itself AND locks the file I am editing. So, after doing the preview, I do another change, go back to preview and it tells me there is a conflict - file being used by another program - ie the first preview effort I made.

Proof seems to be - if I create a simple page I can do previews immediately and forever without the problem.

Using the temporary file (ticked box) approach seems to work better - theres still the delay, and I launch a second preivew - but without the consequences of the unticked box

The only remaining question I have is - is there a way to speed up dreamweaver in creating a temporayry file for a large page, such as the one I have ?

Hi V2 media,
I've gone ito the  pref section and I see that I hve

dependant files with the boxes checked for "prompt to get/checkout" and "prompt to put/check in "

ALSO

PUT OPTIONS I have the box ticked for "prompt before putting files on server"

are you talking about unticking all of the above boxes, or other boxes I have not identified ??

thanks for taking the time !
