A8N320-SLI Deluxe, XP shows my DVD-RW, I put in blank disk, shwos as CDROM and wont burn.

A8N320-SLI Deluxe motherboard.  Windows XP PRO SP2, all critical updates.
Burner is an HP dvd640e

Device manager shows correct make and model drive.
Once I put a blank dvd - R in drive, windows says it is an CDROM DRIVE.  Once I take disk out, it goes back to being an DVD-RW.

Windows has a built in burning engine from Roxio that allows drag and drop burning.  This system is a new install using nvidia nForce driver 6.86.

I am looking for a solution to this problem.
Funny thing is,  Nero is now installed and I can burn with Nero just fine.... but NOT with windows XP built in burning abilities.

Guess I should have said it does the same thing even if I put a blank CDR in the drive.

It goes to CDROM,   Once CDR comes out it goes back to DVD-RW

What happens if you put in DVD movie? and have you tried burning some dvd yet? how does it work out?

From the run command type in services.msc

Make sure the following service is running:

IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service

"Manages CD recording using Image Mastering Applications Programming Interface (IMAPI). If this service is stopped, this computer will be unable to record CDs. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start."

That mean you can burn the DVD using the Nero software ???

If you have another PC to test out, try remove your DVD to another PC and test whether the same problems still occur ........... if no, that mean the IDE cable in the old PC might have the problems with sending / receiving the instructions from the DVD-RW.
