WSUS workstation 'clients' of an onsite server 'client' of a central WSUS server?

I understand that with a WSUS infrastructure, Microsoft recommend that you have a central WSUS Server that then replicates to a WSUS server at each different physical location of your network (e.g. across multiple offices), your onsite clients then connect to your onsite server for updates. Is it possible to have the following:

A WSUS server in your head office. Your servers at each site are then basically 'clients' of this WSUS server, e.g. they simply grab updates, they dont have the WSUS software application installed. The workstations at each site are then 'clients' of your onsite server which is a 'client' of your head office WSUS server. This configuration will avoid having to install and configure any WSUS software on each server at each site. Has anybody tried this?
