I am tring to install service pack 4 on an SQL server 2000 running SP3 (build. The whole process goes smootly (no error messages) but when I check the database version, it still says SP3. I restarted the server to no avail.

can you describe the steps you do?

the most often "problem" is that the download package only extracts to the folder selected, and does nothing then.
you have to go to that folder, and run the setup.exe extracted there...

Well, I'm a little more advanced than that ;)

- I stopped all the SQL services
- Ran the setup.exe
- Accepted all the crap MS is asking
- Set-up progam ran displaying all the "updating this, updating that..." messages
- Restarted the server when prompted

Database still shows wrong build

>- I stopped all the SQL services
is actually not needed...

well, could it be that you have multiple instances on your server, and you update 1 instance, but check the build on another instance?

Yes, I have 3 instances. I checked all of them. None have upgraded

ok, let's go through the process:

you connect on the server box itself,
start the upgrade process 3 times (once per instance), and specify the instance you want to upgrade
after the upgrade, you restart sql server, and then using sql (query analyzer), and run
SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('ProductLevel')
which returns still service pack 3 ?

can you show us where you got (downloaded) the sp4 from?
ie, what is the filename of the .exe that you got.

yes, it will.

>It doesn't...
again, do you run the sp4 on the server itself?
please try to run the setup without the server/instance stopped (the setup will stop it itself)

I have actually (hence the above question), a doubt about if you install the correct service pack file...

SQL2000.MSDE-KB884525-SP4-x86-ENU.EXE

Ok, we are getting somewhere.

It still doesn't update the database. BUT I notice that the Setup.exe in the extracted directory MSDE directory never gets executed by the standard setup batch file.

When I try to manually started, I get a "The instance name specified is invalid"

And I also tried the SQL2000-KB884525-SP4-x86-ENU.EXE
